What a doctor does
A doctor diagnoses illness, plans treatment and follows the patient over time. Much of the work is using knowledge under uncertainty: deciding with incomplete information, weighing probabilities and explaining the decision to the patient in plain words.
That is why medicine is not only memorisation. Reasoning, attention and communication matter as much as knowledge.
The path in Turkey
Medicine programmes are entered through the YKS, and placement uses the SAY score type. The ÖSYM guide sets a minimum ranking requirement for medicine: a candidate below that rank cannot list a medicine programme at all. The figure is published in the guide each year, so the current guide is the one to check at preference time.
The programme lasts six years. Some English medium programmes add a preparatory language year.
A graduate who wants to specialise sits the Medical Specialty Education Entrance Exam, the TUS, run by ÖSYM. The length of specialty training depends on the branch.
Paths abroad
In the United States medicine is not an undergraduate degree. A student first completes a four year bachelor's degree, then applies to medical school. Premed is not a major but a track of prerequisite courses taken during that degree. According to the AAMC, the requirements vary by school and usually include biology, chemistry through organic chemistry and English. Applicants sit the MCAT, which tests natural and social science concepts and scientific problem solving.
In the United Kingdom medicine starts at undergraduate level. Medical schools use the UCAT to select applicants. The UCAT is not a subject test: it measures reasoning skills.
In France, entry to health studies goes through PASS or LAS on Parcoursup. A reform that would merge the two routes is under discussion, so the current rules should be checked before applying.
Which school subjects build the foundation
Chemistry and biology are the language of the first years. Moles, equilibrium and the logic of organic chemistry, along with cells, genetics and physiology, come back in every later course.
Mathematics and statistics matter more than many expect. Reading a study on a drug's effect requires ratios, probability and the idea of a sample. Physics explains the principles behind circulation, breathing and imaging equipment.
Reading and writing are core skills too. Doctors read long texts and write short, accurate notes.
How international programmes strengthen it
IGCSE Chemistry and Physics build a solid base early in high school. AP Statistics brings the statistical thinking needed to read medical research. For students applying abroad, the SAT is a separate measure of English reading speed and mathematical consistency.
Common mistakes
The first mistake is investing only in biology and neglecting mathematics. In Turkey placement uses the SAY score, so mathematics and science count together.
The second is thinking premed is chosen in high school in the US. It is a track followed during the bachelor's degree.
The third is assuming a medical degree from one country lets you practise anywhere. Working as a doctor in another country involves separate recognition and examination steps.
