What a computer engineer does
A computer engineer designs systems where software and hardware work together. Building applications, data systems, networks, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence all sit under this umbrella.
Being a programmer and being a computer engineer are not the same thing. Writing code is a skill; engineering means being able to show, with reasons, that the code is correct, fast and secure. The difference becomes visible in the first university years, in algorithms and data structures courses.
The path in Turkey
Computer engineering is entered through the YKS, and placement uses the SAY score type. The ÖSYM guide sets a minimum ranking requirement for engineering programmes; the figure is published in the guide each year.
The programme lasts four years. English medium programmes add a preparatory language year.
There are close relatives too, such as software engineering and computer science. The content overlaps, but the emphasis differs: one leans towards hardware, one towards software processes, one towards theory. The course list tells you more than the programme's name.
Paths abroad
In the United States computer science is usually an undergraduate major, and admission looks at high school grades, the rigour of the courses taken and, depending on the college's policy, test scores such as the SAT. In the United Kingdom the subject is chosen from the first day of the degree, so the mathematics grade carries weight. In France there is the university route through a licence in informatique and the route through engineering schools.
All three share one point: studying computer science means studying a lot of mathematics.
Which school subjects build the foundation
Mathematics comes first. Functions, logic, counting and probability, then calculus. Analysing how fast an algorithm runs, or understanding the optimisation behind machine learning, rests on these.
Statistics is needed in any field that works with data. Physics, especially electricity and circuits, makes it easier to understand how hardware works.
English is a core subject as well. Documentation, libraries and error messages are largely in English.
How international programmes strengthen it
AP Computer Science A teaches object oriented programming with a subset of Java, and the College Board describes it as equivalent to an introductory college computer science course. AP Calculus prepares for the calculus courses of the first engineering year. AP Cybersecurity is an early door into the security field.
On the IB side, Math AA builds ground close to computer science through its weight on proof and abstract thinking. SAT Math gives a measurable signal of mathematical foundation in applications.
Common mistakes
The first mistake is treating coding as a substitute for mathematics. A student who writes plenty of code in high school but leaves mathematics weak struggles in the first university year.
The second is assuming a score in AP Computer Science A brings course exemption at every university. Credit and placement are decided by each university.
The third is thinking that building games or apps alone is preparation. These feed interest, but they do not replace steady work in mathematics.
