What an architect does
An architect thinks at once about how a building will be used, how it will stand and how it will look. The work involves design, construction knowledge, regulations, cost and working with people. Drawing is only one part; most of it is solving problems and speaking a common language with others, such as engineers and clients.
The path in Turkey
Architecture programmes are entered through the YKS, and placement uses the SAY score type. The ÖSYM guide sets a minimum ranking requirement for architecture; the figure is published in the guide each year.
The programme lasts four years. English medium programmes add a preparatory language year.
Graduating is not enough on its own. Law No. 6235 on the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects requires those who practise engineering and architecture to register with the chamber of their specialty and keep their membership; for architects this is the Chamber of Architects. Membership is optional for those employed permanently in public institutions.
Interior architecture is a separate programme tied to a separate chamber, so the two names should not be confused when choosing.
Paths abroad
In the United States, according to NCARB, licensure has three parts: an architecture degree from a NAAB accredited programme, the AXP experience programme and the ARE exam. Rules vary by state.
In the United Kingdom the title architect is protected. According to the ARB, a person who is not on the Register cannot call themselves an architect; joining requires recognised qualifications or prescribed examinations.
In France, training takes place in the national schools of architecture and leads to the Diplôme d'État d'architecte. To take on projects in one's own name and register with the Ordre des architectes, a one year HMONP programme follows that diploma.
Many architecture programmes abroad ask for a portfolio when applying. A portfolio is not only finished pictures but sketches and experiments that show the thinking process.
Which school subjects build the foundation
Mathematics, especially geometry and trigonometry, is the language for measuring and describing space. Physics, through force, equilibrium and how materials behave, explains why a building stands.
Freehand drawing and three dimensional thinking develop over time; a regular sketching habit is the most reliable source of that skill. History and art history show which needs and which periods buildings came from. Writing matters too: an architect has to defend an idea.
How international programmes strengthen it
AP Physics 1 builds force and equilibrium soundly through mechanics. AP Precalculus and IGCSE Additional Mathematics prepare the trigonometry and functions used in the first year of architecture school. For IB students, Math AA or Math AI does the same job.
Common mistakes
The first mistake is thinking architecture is only drawing talent. In Turkey placement uses the SAY score, so mathematics and physics are decisive.
The second is leaving the portfolio to the last months. A strong portfolio grows out of sketches and experiments spread over time.
The third is assuming the degree alone is enough to practise. Both in Turkey and abroad there are registration or licensing steps.
